Influenza disease

Influenza is one of the most common illnesses during the winter season. It is caused by a viral infection that affects the respiratory system. Influenza does not require antibiotic treatment, and symptoms usually resolve on their own within about one week. However, several home remedies can help relieve the patient’s symptoms.

This article discusses a number of natural remedies and tips that may help in managing influenza at home.

Influenza can be managed at home without medication using the following methods and natural remedies:

Steam inhalation:
Steam inhalation helps reduce nasal congestion associated with influenza. To try this method, follow these steps:

  • Boil water and remove it from the heat source.
  • Pour the hot water into a bowl.
  • Place a towel over the head, covering both the head and the bowl to help inhale the steam.
  • Close the eyes and inhale deeply for 30 seconds.

A few drops of peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil may be added to the water to enhance the effect and help open the airways. This process can be repeated whenever congestion occurs.

Warm and cold compresses:
Applying warm compresses to the forehead and nose helps relieve headaches and sinus pain. Cold compresses may also be used on the forehead to reduce fever if present.

Saltwater gargling:
This method helps eliminate mucus in the throat and reduces throat pain while also helping to clear the ears.
Simply dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water, then gargle without swallowing.

Nasal irrigation:
Nasal cleansing is an important step in treating influenza at home, as it helps relieve nasal congestion. This is done by pouring a saline solution into one nostril and allowing it to exit through the other.

A homemade solution can be prepared by mixing a quarter teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of baking soda in warm water. Ready-made saline solutions are also available at pharmacies.
